Bayer not to blame for Zeige poisoning - expert opinion

Toxicological expert confirms: No evidence of Bayer responsibility for Zeige poisoning

Bayer has been cleared of any responsibility for the poisoning of horsewoman Isabell Werth’s Olympic horse Weihegold OLD, according to a toxicological expert.

Professor Dr. Hans-Joachim Selbach of the Institute of Animal Nutrition at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, has concluded that there is no evidence to suggest that the horse was poisoned by a Bayer product.

His findings come after a months-long investigation into the circumstances surrounding the horse’s death. Weihegold OLD died in February 2023, just three months after winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

The horse’s death prompted an outpouring of grief from the equestrian community and led to widespread speculation about the cause of death. Some commentators suggested that the horse may have been poisoned by a Bayer product, such as the anti-inflammatory drug phenylbutazone.

However, Professor Selbach’s investigation has found no evidence to support these claims. He said that the horse’s death was most likely due to a pre-existing heart condition.

“There is no evidence that the horse was poisoned by a Bayer product,” said Professor Selbach. “The most likely cause of death was a pre-existing heart condition.”

Bayer has welcomed the findings of Professor Selbach’s investigation. The company said that it has always maintained that its products are safe and effective.

“We are pleased that Professor Selbach’s investigation has confirmed that our products are not responsible for the death of Weihegold OLD,” said a Bayer spokesperson.

“We offer our condolences to Isabell Werth and her family on the loss of their beloved horse.”
